Among the news is a link in the certificate wizard to the guide written by yours truly:
http://mumble.info/certificate.php
The other news can be found here.
The bitmap has been replaced by an Avatar, that should have a 1:1 ratio, e.g. 120×120 pixels. The overlay has been revamped and renders much nicer now, and also shows the new avatars next to the name.
Get the new client here.

The latest snapshot hopefully has fixed the problems with the new overlay dying. The new rendering is really nice!

The new main window.

Example of the new overlay, with avatar support.

Since I started the guide on creating StartCom Class 1 certificates in mumble, I got around to creating subdomain certificates for the mumble servers as well.
So I wrote a little HOWTO create and install a StartCom subdomain certificate in murmur. This new guide can be found on the mumble wiki:

There are some irritating bugs getting fixed in 1.2.2, and a few nice new features:
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Upcoming#1.2.2
One of the big paradigm shifts is the use of client certificates for authentication. Since I recently wrote the documentation on that on Mumble’s wiki, I thought I’d promote getting a certificate:

Most of the new features are in the current snapshot.
We will move to 1.2.2 as soon as it is released.

Shortcuts is even easier now – you can have multiple keys bound to join channel. So pressing numpad 0-9 can get you instantly into a channel of your choice.

This is a minor, but nice feature release.
- Windows 7 jumplist support
- Status icon added in system tray
- Shortcuts using whispers working again
Get the client here. Most of our servers are already updated, and the rest will be done later today.

My handy tip about whispers showed to be a bit moot since there is a known bug in the 1.2.0 release.
The workaround is to disconnect from the server after making changes to your shortcuts, instead of just closing the application.
You can also try the latest snapshot, which fixes the bug.

As of now all our servers have been upgraded, and thus demand a 1.2.0 client.
I found out how to create shortcuts to separate channels directly, see the picture. What I’ve done is to bind NUM-/ to join channel and NUM-0-2 to whisper certain channels. Then I can press NUM-/ + NUM-0 to get to the root channel directly. Pretty neat.

Mumble 1.2 has now reached Beta status. I have upgraded our internal server to this release and tried out the new beta client today.
Get it here.
The new 1.2 protocol is not compatible with 1.1.X, so server and clients should be upgraded at approximately the same time. I don’t see us moving to the 1.2 on the real servers until 1.2 reaches gold. However, the 1.2 client contains an extra binary that is 1.1.x compatible, so you can install the beta client if you wish, and still be able to use our servers.
One sweet feature with 1.2 is that it contains authorization using public/private keys instead of passwords, and you can actually register a user from within the client itself. I just tried it out and it works great.
